Oden forskningsfartyg

Oden

Owned and operated by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA), Oden was built at the Arendal shipyard in Gothenburg and launched in 1989. Since then, the Swedish Polar Research Secretariat has chartered it for various polar expeditions. The vessel is renowned for its efficient ice breaking capabilities, powered by a diesel-mechanical system comprising four engines that deliver a combined output of 24,500 hp. The icebreaker’s two 4.5-meter diameter propellers, equipped with nozzles, are specifically designed to handle the harsh ice conditions of polar oceans.

Availability and opportunities

There will be a Swedish – Canadian Early Career Scientist programme available each year 2025-2027. Most likely, there will be opportunities to apply for additional berths & shiptime 2025 – 2027.

Available berths on Oden will be announced here: www.polar.se.

Area of operation

Odens primary work area is the Arctic Ocean.

Oden can work in both the polar regions, but she is needed in the Baltic sea during the Swedish winter making her only available for SWERVE voyages during Swedish summer. Because of this her main research for SWERVE voyages will be in the Arctic.
