Electra

RV Electra is the research vessel owned and operated by Stockholm University to support their research and education needs, and for transport to and from the Askö field station. She is equipped with scientific equipment for air, water, and sediment sampling as well as geophysical instruments. Modern ship technology and environmentally friendly engines provide exceptional functionality and conditions for operating within a large geographical area, but focus areas are coastal water bodies around the Baltic Sea. Electra has Dynamic Positioning 1.

Availability and opportunities

Electra usually has many short expeditions, rather than few long ones. Due to this, scheduling is traditionally handled as requests are received. There are, however, several Stockholm University courses that are run at a similar time each year, and some environmental monitoring work that is undertaken for two days each week between March – April.

The availability of Electra for SWERVE-funded voyages is therefore somewhat flexible, and if you are awarded ship-time funding on this vessel, then an approximate date for your voyage will be provided when funding is announced, but precise voyage dates will be discussed with the Primary Investigator closer to the expected voyage dates.

Electra is fitted with state-of-the-art acoustic and other scientific equipment enabling voyages for all marine disciplines. The smaller size of this vessel means that she is particularly suited to near-shore research.

Area of operation

SWERVE voyages on Electra can take place throughout the Baltic Sea. Voyages are limited to a maximum of 11 days, and weather can be a limiting factor for sampling beyond near-coastal, especially in winter.
